Kimpo, South Korea – A new musical, "Aegibong," is set to premiere at the Kimpo Arts Hall from February 19-22. This original production, a joint effort between Ganda, a theater delivery service, and the Kimpo Cultural Foundation, is the result of a 2024 local arts organization support program.
Based on a local legend, "Aegibong" tells a timeless tale of love and loss. The musical blends traditional Korean folklore with a modern twist, as a contemporary high school student named "Ai" time-travels to the Joseon Dynasty and encounters a provincial governor. Their unexpected romance unfolds against the backdrop of the tumultuous Joseon period.
The story centers on Aegibong, a 154-meter mountain located between Gagem-ri and Jogang-ri in Haseong-myeon, Kimpo. Local legend has it that during the Byeongjahoran War, a young woman named "Aegibong" and a provincial governor were separated by invading forces. Aegibong's heart-wrenching tale of longing and her eventual passing on the mountain gave rise to the mountain's name.
The musical promises a captivating blend of traditional Korean music, trot, and contemporary sounds, accompanied by dynamic performances such as traditional Korean fan dancing and breakdancing.
Directed by Usang-wook and written by Yuchae-ha, "Aegibong" is expected to resonate with audiences of all ages.
