MAUMERE, Indonesia — A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Flores Island in eastern Indonesia early Saturday morning, causing widespread destruction, triggering landslides, and leaving at least 47 people dead. The massive tremor, which occurred at 5:58 a.m. local time, has once again underscored the extreme seismic vulnerability of the region, which sits squarely on the Pacific "Ring of Fire." 

Casualties and Damage

According to officials from the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), the death toll has climbed to at least 47, with over 50 people reported injured. The most severe damage is concentrated across the regencies of Sikka, Manggarai, and East Manggarai. In the village of Reok, rescue teams successfully pulled 16 bodies from the debris of a massive landslide triggered by the shaking. 

Search and rescue operations are currently facing significant logistical challenges. The earthquake caused major landslides that severed the Trans-Flores Highway, a vital 700-kilometer mountain road that connects the island from Labuan Bajo to Larantuka. Furthermore, power outages across cities and villages have severely hampered communication, making it difficult for authorities to assess the full extent of the damage in remote, mountainous areas. 

Tsunami Warning and Emergency Response 

The earthquake, which struck at a shallow depth of approximately 10 kilometers, prompted an immediate tsunami warning from Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). Fearing a repeat of past disasters, thousands of residents in coastal areas, including Maumere, Nagekeo, and Ende, fled to higher ground on motorcycles, trucks, and on foot. 

The tsunami warning was lifted about three hours later after monitoring confirmed no significant, life-threatening sea-level changes. Despite this, the psychological impact remains profound. In the regency of Nagekeo alone, approximately 2,000 villagers sought refuge in temporary emergency shelters. 

Hospitals in the region have also been forced to adapt to the crisis. Footage from local television showed medical staff moving beds, oxygen cylinders, and essential equipment outdoors, establishing makeshift treatment areas as a precaution against the structural instability of damaged hospital buildings. 

A Region Prone to Seismic Activity

The Flores region is no stranger to such tragedies. It is situated along the "Flores Back-arc Thrust," a complex fault system where the Australian Plate subducts beneath the Sunda Plate. Saturday’s disaster has inevitably drawn grim comparisons to the devastating earthquake and tsunami of December 12, 1992, which also measured magnitude 7.7. That event resulted in the deaths of approximately 2,500 people, largely due to a massive, earthquake-triggered tsunami that reached run-up heights of over 26 meters in some coastal villages. 

Since this morning's main shock, the region has been rattled by more than 100 aftershocks, with the strongest reaching magnitude 6.1. Experts warn that these tremors are a common consequence of tectonic stress readjustment along the fault line and may continue for several days. 

"We are continuing to coordinate with local authorities to reach the most isolated communities," said Suharyanto, head of the National Disaster Management Agency. He confirmed that three helicopters and specialized rescue vessels have been deployed to expedite the delivery of medical supplies and the evacuation of the injured. 

As the island of Flores continues to assess the damage, the focus remains on the critical race to reach survivors trapped under collapsed buildings and landslide debris. For the 2 million people who call this lush, mountainous island home, the road to recovery will be long and arduous.
