A 20-year-old woman has been arrested for causing an eight-car pileup in Gangnam district while driving without a license. Seoul Central District Court Judge Shin Young-hee issued an arrest warrant for the woman, identified only as A, following a hearing on [date]. The judge cited the risk of her fleeing as the reason for the arrest.
On the afternoon of [date], A caused a multi-vehicle collision involving seven cars and one motorcycle on Teheran-ro, a major road in Gangnam district. Nine people were injured in the accident.
Prior to the pileup, around 1 p.m. on the same day, A hit a woman pushing a baby stroller in Geoyeodong, Songpa district and fled the scene. Both the child and the mother were reported to have sustained minor injuries.
Police arrested A on charges of hit-and-run resulting in injury and driving without a license. Investigations revealed that although A had taken driving lessons, she had never obtained a driver's license. Despite being advised by her mother to take a taxi, A drove her mother's car.
After the accident, A called her mother and confessed to hitting someone and crashing into ten cars. When her mother told her to turn off the engine, A replied that she didn't know how.
During police questioning, A stated that she was taking medication for anxiety and had taken it on the day of the accident. Police have sent samples for a detailed drug analysis at the National Forensic Service. There was no evidence of alcohol or drug use.
When A arrived at the court at around 2:40 p.m. on the same day, she remained silent in response to reporters' questions about why she fled the scene and if she had taken medication.
