SEOUL – On the 81st anniversary of Korea’s liberation from Japanese colonial rule, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung unveiled a bold vision for the future, calling for a "new liberation" that would propel the nation toward becoming an "Irreplaceable Korea". The centerpiece of his address was a formal proposal to North Korea to initiate high-level dialogue aimed at ending the protracted war and replacing the unstable armistice with a lasting peace regime. 

"Let us put down our intentions to threaten each other and begin discussions to end the long-running war as the directly involved parties," President Lee stated. He suggested that this dialogue could serve as a venue to explore effective measures to halt the advancement of North Korea’s nuclear capabilities, emphasizing that the South is prepared to take proactive, institutionalized steps to prevent military escalation. 

A Three-Pronged Approach to Peace

President Lee outlined three core principles for his administration’s North Korea policy: "inclusive peaceful coexistence," "stable peaceful coexistence," and "responsible peaceful coexistence". He reiterated his commitment to respecting the current North Korean system, stating clearly that Seoul has no intention of pursuing unification through absorption or engaging in hostile acts. 

This proposal comes despite a challenging geopolitical environment. North Korea has remained largely unresponsive to Seoul’s recent diplomatic overtures and has been strengthening military ties with Russia, causing significant regional concern. Analysts note that while President Lee's rhetoric is conciliatory, the path to implementation remains fraught with hurdles given Pyongyang's recent shift toward defining the South as its "most hostile state". 

Domestic Reform and Korea-Japan Relations

Beyond peninsular peace, the President addressed the importance of "new liberation" in the context of national development. He promised a major reallocation of national resources, specifically aiming to redraw the country’s growth map to ensure that every region can serve as a hub of innovation. Furthermore, he reaffirmed his administration's intent to recover assets illicitly accumulated by pro-Japanese collaborators during the colonial era, pledging to use these funds to better support the families of independence activists. 

On the diplomatic front, President Lee spoke of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between South Korea and Japan. He emphasized the necessity of a future-oriented relationship while insisting that true trust can only be built by "squarely facing the past". He called on the Japanese government to join South Korea in opening a "new 60 years of peace and prosperity," noting that cooperation between the two neighbors is more critical than ever in an era of global economic restructuring. 

A Call for Political Unity

Concluding his address, President Lee acknowledged the hardships faced by the public, including rising prices and the struggles of small business owners and the youth. He urged domestic political factions to abandon outdated ideological conflicts. "Difference must not become hostility," he said, appealing for a shift toward a "politics of dialogue and compromise" to ensure that the nation moves forward as a unified "Team Korea" in the face of intense global competition. 

As the administration looks to translate these principles into concrete action, the international community will be watching to see if North Korea will respond to the invitation to sit down at the negotiating table, or if the peninsula will remain locked in its current cycle of tension.
