ASUNCIÓN, Paraguay - A 48-year-old River Plate fan who traveled to Paraguay for the Supercopa Internacional final between River Plate and Talleres de Córdoba was arrested by local police for stealing a cell phone. The incident came to light after security cameras at an electronics store in Asunción captured the theft.
The fan, identified as Jorge Osvaldo Arias, was seen on surveillance footage entering the store posing as a customer. When the store staff was distracted, Arias allegedly swiped an Oppo brand cell phone and concealed it in his River Plate branded pants.
Sub-Commissioner William Mendoza of the Paraguayan National Police Investigations Department stated that Arias was located at the Hotel Excelsior, where he was staying. Upon confrontation, Arias voluntarily surrendered the stolen gray Oppo cell phone and was taken into custody.
Arias was transferred to the headquarters of the Asunción Investigations Department and placed at the disposal of the Public Ministry. Local authorities confirmed that Arias has no prior criminal record in Argentina.
