Bob Mackie, the iconic American fashion and costume designer whose flamboyant, high-octane creations defined Hollywood glamour and pop culture for over six decades, has passed away at the age of 87. According to his publicist Jenelle Hamilton and official statements on his social media channels, Mackie died on Monday, September 14, 2026, from pneumonia in Palm Springs, California. 

A heartfelt statement shared by his team read, "It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that Mr. Bob Mackie passed away today. He lived his 87 years to the fullest, fulfilling his dream of being a Fashion and Costume Designer, which is all he ever wanted to do. His genius and extraordinary designs will live on forever, continuing to bring beauty into this world." 

Born Robert Gordon Mackie in 1939 in Monterey Park, California, Mackie studied at Pasadena City College and the Chouinard Art Institute before embarking on a remarkable career in entertainment design. He initially worked as a sketch artist under legendary designers like Frank Thompson at Paramount and Jean Louis. In his early twenties, one of his first notable assignments involved sketching the famous sheer, flesh-toned, crystal-encrusted gown worn by Marilyn Monroe when she sang "Happy Birthday, Mr. President" to John F. Kennedy in 1962. 

Mackie rose to widespread prominence through his work on television, most notably on "The Carol Burnett Show," where his dazzling variety-show costumes captured the imagination of millions. Affectionately dubbed the "Sultan of Sequins" and the "Master of Glitter," Mackie specialized in bold, theatrical, and unashamedly glamorous aesthetics. His signature style relied heavily on hand-sewn beads, shimmering spangles, feathers, and daring silhouettes that transformed entertainers into larger-than-life icons.

Throughout his legendary career, Mackie dressed an elite roster of global superstars, including Cher, Tina Turner, Diana Ross, Elton John, Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler, and Madonna. His creative partnership with Cher yielded some of the most unforgettable red-carpet moments in Academy Awards history, including her iconic 1986 feathered mohawk and sequined midriff-baring ensemble. Over the course of his illustrious career, Mackie won nine Primetime Emmy Awards, a prestigious Tony Award for costume design, and received three Academy Award nominations for his cinematic work on films such as Lady Sings the Blues and Funny Lady. Even in his later years, his influence remained vital across generations, with contemporary pop sensations like Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, and Sabrina Carpenter wearing his archival and custom creations for major album covers, Grammy performances, and MTV Video Music Awards. 

Following the news of his passing, an outpouring of grief and admiration flooded social media. Cher wrote a touching tribute on X, stating, "My dear Bob has gone up to heaven. Knowing him, he's bringing Sequins, Beads, & his sketch pad. Good nite sweet Prince." Elton John remembered him as one of the most courteous and incredible people to work with, noting that every costume Mackie made felt like a true work of art.
