Norwegian consumers are facing empty shelves at grocery stores nationwide, sparking frustration and concerns. This comes after a period of abundant supply leading up to Christmas.
Several key food items are currently in short supply, including fresh fish, various meats, bacon, and eggs. A nationwide egg shortage, which first emerged last year, has resurfaced.
Major grocery chains, including Coop, REMA, and those under NorgesGruppen (such as KIWI and Meny), are all experiencing empty shelves. Signs explaining the shortages cite "delivery challenges," "shortages of raw materials," and wholesalers being sold out.
State broadcaster NRK reported on the issue, highlighting the disappointment of many shoppers. A Coop spokesperson attributed the shortages to the disruption of production and delivery schedules caused by several mid-week holidays in the past two weeks. NorgesGruppen echoed this sentiment, acknowledging "challenges tied to some fresh products" following the holiday period.
Coop further explained that January typically sees limited merchandise due to "pricing battles" with competitors that encourage consumer stockpiling before the holidays. Additionally, demand for premium products tends to decline after the festive season.
