Autonomous a2z (hereinafter referred to as a2z), a South Korean autonomous driving startup, has officially launched an autonomous shuttle service on public roads in downtown Singapore, collaborating with Grab, Southeast Asia's largest super-app company. This partnership is expected to be a significant milestone for South Korea's leading autonomous driving technology, paving the way for commercial success in the global market, especially the dynamic Southeast Asian market.

The autonomous shuttle service, introduced by Autonomous a2z and Grab, operates on a 3.9km route between the Grab headquarters and Singapore's One-north MRT station. This 24-seater bus-based autonomous vehicle commenced operations for Grab employees on July 9. The shuttle is equipped with a2z's proprietary Level 4 autonomous driving solution, and a skilled safety driver is onboard to manage operations.

This service is a crucial step towards commercial expansion, beyond a mere technology demonstration. In March, a2z signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Grab to evaluate the safety, commercial viability, and job creation effects of autonomous vehicles. This shuttle service is the first tangible outcome of that collaboration, and both companies plan to precisely analyze operational data to gradually expand the service area and scale in the future.

Singapore's urban environment is complex and unique, demanding advanced autonomous driving technology. To build a system optimized for this local environment, a2z collected over 100 hours of extensive data, undergoing annotation, algorithm training, and real-route testing processes. Notably, securing an autonomous driving solution that perfectly responds to the tropical climate, unpredictable complex traffic situations, and the left-hand traffic system (different from Korea) is considered a key success factor for this service. This demonstrates that Korean autonomous driving technology is fully applicable in various global environments.

To maximize operational convenience, a2z's autonomous driving technology is closely integrated with Grab's smart vehicle solution, 'Carta Dashcam.' Carta Dashcam detects vehicle location and passenger information in real-time and links it to the Grab app, enabling efficient passenger management and seamless service provision.

Currently, the shuttle operates for two hours daily, avoiding peak commuting times, with additional training hours allocated separately to continuously enhance system stability and reliability. This operational approach demonstrates a cautious strategy designed to safely operate autonomous driving services in real road environments during the initial stages.

Prior to this collaboration with Grab, a2z had been actively pursuing entry into the Singapore market. Last year, they established a joint venture with local company Kilsa Global and secured the 'COSMO' smart city project in Singapore, demonstrating proactive efforts. Particularly noteworthy is that in May of this year, a2z became the first Korean company to obtain Singapore's M1 autonomous driving license. This signifies that a2z's technology and safety have been officially recognized by the Singapore authorities.

Furthermore, a2z has contributed to the development of local autonomous driving technology by installing and operating its self-developed LiDAR infrastructure system at Singapore's autonomous driving testbed. These efforts show a2z's commitment to becoming a key player in Singapore's autonomous driving ecosystem, beyond being a mere technology provider.

Kim Ho-jin, Senior Vice President of Business Development at a2z, stated that this collaboration was "an achievement made possible with the support of the Korean government, the Korea Automotive Technology Institute (KATRI), and the National IT Industry Promotion Agency (NIPA)," expressing the ambition to "further advance full-stack autonomous driving technology and lead the Southeast Asian market."

This Singapore autonomous shuttle service is expected to be a significant milestone, as South Korean companies' accumulated autonomous driving technology translates into actual commercial services. It is anticipated to widely promote Korea's technological prowess in the global autonomous driving market and, moreover, serve as a bridgehead to lead the global autonomous driving market beyond Southeast Asia. All eyes are on what innovative services a2z will unveil through its cooperation with Grab in the future.
