[GLOBAL ECONOMIC TIMES] Taiwan spotted a record 153 Chinese military aircraft around the self-ruled island, according to official data released Tuesday, after China held a day of large-scale military exercises.
The planes were sighted in the 25 hours before 6 a.m. on Tuesday, the Ministry of Defense reported in a statement, which is the highest number in history for a single day.
China rodeó Taiwán el lunes con aviones de combate, drones, buques de guerra y barcos de la guardia costera.
Taiwan, in response, deployed “appropriate forces” and declared “high alert” on its outlying islands.
China considers Taiwan part of its territory and on Monday reaffirmed that it will not renounce the use of force to regain control of the island.
The Taiwanese Defense Ministry also registered 14 Chinese navy ships in the 25-hour period, slightly down from the 17 ships announced Monday afternoon.
Of the planes detected, 111 crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait that separates the island from mainland China, according to the figures.
For its part, Japan revealed on Tuesday that it had expressed concerns to China about the military exercises and that it moved fighter jets around its southern island of Yonaguni.
“The government closely follows the aforementioned activities with great interest, and conveyed Japanese concerns to the Chinese side,” deputy cabinet chief Kazuhiko Aoko told reporters.
