Gwangju, South Korea – The Gwangju Dong-gu district announced on [date] that it will be creating a new "Hong Kong Street" in Chungjang-ro 3-ga by next February.

The 50-meter-long alley, located near Chungjang-ro 5-gil, has been largely abandoned with most businesses closed except for a few fortune-telling shops. The district plans to revitalize this area by introducing a Hong Kong-themed street with various attractions.

Four businesses, including a Hong Kong-style restaurant, a bar, a single malt and whiskey cocktail bar, and a dessert cafe, will be established in the alley. Outdoor seating areas will be set up, allowing visitors to enjoy food and drinks al fresco.

To enhance the Hong Kong atmosphere, the district plans to install neon signs with Chinese characters, create sculptures resembling road signs, and paint Chinese characters on the asphalt.

The decision to create a Hong Kong-themed street was based on the growing popularity of Hong Kong as a travel destination among young people and the lack of similar themed establishments in Gwangju. The upcoming opening of the Monkey Terminal, a new shopping complex, just 50 meters away, also contributed to this decision.

The district hopes that the specialized street will attract visitors to the Chungjang-ro area and revitalize the local economy. By including a bar, the district aims to create an environment where visitors can stay in Chungjang-ro for longer periods, even at night.

However, some concerns have been raised about the project. Critics argue that the street could primarily benefit the Monkey Terminal, as visitors to the specialized street might also visit the shopping complex, making it seem like a taxpayer-funded subsidy for a private business.

Additionally, there are concerns about the proliferation of specialized streets in the Chungjang-ro area, as there are already several themed streets nearby, such as K-pop Star Street, Wedding Street, Movie Street, and Goblin Alley. Some question the effectiveness of creating new specialized streets when existing ones have been criticized for being ineffective.

A district official responded to these concerns, stating that the project aims to create a vibrant nightlife in Chungjang-ro and attract more young people to the area. They also emphasized that the target area is a neglected alley and that the scale of the project is relatively small, aiming to create a "hot place" rather than a large-scale themed street.

The official expressed confidence that the new street will help Chungjang-ro regain its status as the center of Gwangju's commerce.
