Seoul, South Korea – LG Display, a leading global innovator in display technology, has announced a groundbreaking achievement in flexible display technology. The company has successfully developed a stretchable display that can be stretched up to 50% of its original size, marking a significant leap forward in the industry.
Unveiled at the 'Stretchable Display Development National Research Project Final Achievement Sharing Session' held at LG Science Park in Ma곡, Seoul on November 8th, the new display demonstrated unprecedented flexibility and performance. The 12-inch display can be stretched to a maximum of 18 inches while maintaining a high resolution of 100 pixels per inch (PPI) and full RGB color.
Compared to the first prototype unveiled in 2022, the latest iteration offers a remarkable 200% improvement in stretchability, reaching a maximum elongation of 50%. This enhanced flexibility allows for a wider range of design possibilities in various applications. Furthermore, the display has undergone rigorous testing, demonstrating durability with over 10,000 stretching cycles. The use of micro LEDs with a pitch of less than 40 micrometers ensures clear and vivid images even in extreme environments, such as high and low temperatures and physical shocks.
LG Display attributed this technological breakthrough to the adoption of innovative materials and design techniques. By utilizing a special silicone substrate commonly used in contact lenses, the company was able to significantly enhance the flexibility of the display. Additionally, a new wiring design structure contributed to the overall performance and durability of the product.
Since 2020, LG Display has been at the forefront of stretchable display research as the lead organization of the 'Stretchable Display Development National Research Project' sponsored by the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy. This collaborative project involved 19 domestic academic, industrial, and research institutions.
With this latest advancement, LG Display is poised to revolutionize various industries, including wearable devices, automotive, and robotics. The stretchable display technology offers endless possibilities for creating innovative and immersive user experiences.
