Sejong Special Self-Governing City (Mayor Cho Sang-ho) is applying the government's management guidelines for water-heavy facilities to the field for the first time nationwide, promoting water conservation and carbon reduction.
On the 16th, the city held a business agreement ceremony at the Sejong Room in City Hall with five organizations—the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment, Korea Water Resources Corporation, Korea Environment Corporation, Korea Midland Power Co., Ltd. Sejong Power Plant, and Korea Asset Management Corporation—to establish a leading management model for water-heavy facilities.
This agreement was arranged to promote a pilot project establishing a leading model that practically applies the management plan for water-heavy facilities established and distributed by the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment last December.
The pilot project aims to establish a water demand management system and reduce water usage through cooperation among local governments, the government, public institutions, and water-heavy facilities targeting large-scale facilities that use 60,000 tons or more of water annually.
Under the agreement, the six organizations will carry out: ▲investigation of actual water use status; ▲establishment of management plans such as setting water reduction targets; ▲promotion of water conservation and reuse projects and technical support; ▲disclosure of water usage and performance verification; and ▲discovery and sharing of best practices.
Through this, it is expected to reduce the annual water usage of water-heavy facilities—Korea Midland Power Co., Ltd. Sejong Power Plant and Korea Asset Management Corporation Central Development Division—by approximately 29,000 cubic meters.
Upon achieving this goal, it is projected to save approximately 98 million won in water utility bills and achieve an annual carbon reduction effect of about 6.9 tCO₂eq.
This is equivalent to the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed in a year by about 1,041 30-year-old pine trees.
Lee Kyung-woo, Director of the Environment and Greenery Bureau, stated, "This pilot project is a model where water-heavy facilities and supporting institutions voluntarily cooperate for the first time nationwide, with facilities publicly disclosing their water usage and implementing reduction targets. We will closely verify the project's performance so that it can be expanded to other facilities and regions."
