Zhuhai, China – A horrific incident unfolded in Zhuhai, southern China, as a car rammed into a crowd of people at a sports center, leaving at least 35 dead and 43 injured. The tragedy occurred on Tuesday evening, just days before the city was set to host a major international air show.
According to the Zhuhai Public Security Bureau, a 62-year-old man identified only by his surname, Pan, drove a vehicle into the sports center, striking pedestrians. He then attempted to flee the scene before being apprehended by police. Pan was found with self-inflicted injuries and was hospitalized.
Local authorities believe that the attack was motivated by the man's dissatisfaction with the outcome of a recent divorce. Witnesses described a chaotic scene with numerous people lying on the ground. The incident has sparked widespread shock and grief in China.
Social media platforms in China were flooded with posts about the incident, but many have since been removed by censors. The timing of the attack, just days before the Zhuhai Airshow, has led to speculation that authorities are trying to suppress negative news.
In response to the tragedy, Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered that all efforts be made to treat the injured and that the perpetrator be severely punished. The government has also dispatched a team to oversee the investigation into the incident.
