SEOUL — Wonlim, a prominent South Korean industrial packaging specialist, is capturing market attention as its strategic expansion into venture capital and medical devices yields robust financial rewards.
At the core of this corporate spotlight is Hanbit Investment, a venture capital subsidiary established in 1990. Hanbit has built a high-profile portfolio, notably securing pre-IPO stakes in fashion-tech giant Musinsa and capitalizing on K-beauty leader APR—the latter of which yielded a 3.3x return following its public offering.
Hanbit’s strategic footprint extends heavily into high-tech sectors, holding equity in prominent artificial intelligence and robotics innovators such as FuriosaAI, MakinaRocks, Figure AI, and Skild AI. Its life sciences portfolio has also proven lucrative, highlighted by successful exits in AI drug developer OncoCross and medical equipment firm DRTECH, alongside partial share realizations in dental material maker Grazy.
Concurrently, Wonlim’s healthcare subsidiary, Star Bio, has emerged as another core growth engine. Operating since 2003, Star Bio serves as the domestic distributor for global orthopedic leader Stryker, managing a portfolio that includes advanced surgical systems like the "Mako" robot. Capitalizing on South Korea's rapid demographic aging, Star Bio expanded its distribution network beyond the capital region into the Gangwon and Gyeongsang provinces. This geographic push fueled a 28% jump in annual revenue over a two-year span, reaching 33.4 billion KRW by 2025, with strong momentum continuing into the first half of this year.
While diversifying into high-growth arenas, Wonlim remains an undisputed powerhouse in its traditional core: industrial packaging. Founded in 1968 and initially recognized for replacing traditional straw bags with polypropylene (PP) rice sacks in the 1970s, the company currently commands roughly 60% of the domestic PP and PE packaging market. It supplies high-capacity FFS bags and bulk container packaging to major petrochemical heavyweights including LG Chem, Lotte Chemical, and SK Geocentric. To align with global ESG trends, Wonlim has further upgraded its facilities to manufacture eco-friendly, reusable PE film options and low-carbon packaging lines.
This dual-engine strategy—combining stable cash flows from its market-leading packaging operations with aggressive investments in frontier tech and medical fields—is translating directly into solid financials. Consolidated revenue for 2025 rose 8.8% year-over-year to 89.7 billion KRW, while first-half operating profits climbed 26.4% to 2 billion KRW.
Bolstered by three decades of successful diversification, Wonlim’s leadership emphasizes that the company will continue to safeguard its manufacturing dominance while relentlessly pursuing high-value growth sectors.
