On April 22nd, Cheonan City hosted a significant commemorative event at the City Hall's Bongseo Hall to mark the 45th Annual Day of Persons with Disabilities in South Korea. Organized by the Cheonan City Branch of the Korea Federation of Organizations of Persons with Physical Disabilities in South Chungcheong Province, the event drew approximately 1,000 attendees, including individuals with disabilities, their families, community members, and stakeholders.
The day's program was designed to champion the rights and enhance the social integration of persons with disabilities. The festivities commenced with an inspiring pre-show performance by a band comprised of individuals with developmental disabilities from Nazarene University, highlighting their talents and capabilities. A central part of the ceremony was the recognition of individuals who have made significant contributions to the advancement of disability rights and welfare through the presentation of meritorious service awards. The celebration also featured a captivating congratulatory performance by renowned jazz pianist Gino Park, adding an element of artistic appreciation to the event.
Beyond the formal ceremony, Cheonan City provided platforms to showcase the diverse talents and contributions of individuals with disabilities. The City Hall lobby was transformed into an art gallery, hosting an exhibition of artwork created by individuals with developmental disabilities. This initiative aimed to celebrate their artistic expression and foster a more positive understanding of disability within the wider community.
Furthermore, the event facilitated direct engagement with various support systems available to persons with disabilities. Twelve organizations and groups, including vocational rehabilitation centers and welfare agencies, set up promotional booths. These booths offered valuable information about disability-related welfare services, showcased products made by individuals with disabilities, and provided 체험 programs, allowing attendees to gain firsthand experience and knowledge.
Cheonan City reiterated its commitment to building an inclusive society where persons with disabilities can lead lives free from discrimination. Mayor Park Sang-don emphasized the importance of shifting societal perceptions and expanding practical support mechanisms to empower individuals with disabilities to achieve independence. He stressed that while disabilities may present challenges, they should never be seen as limitations to what individuals can accomplish. The city affirmed its ongoing dedication to implementing policies that raise awareness and ensure the fundamental rights of its disabled citizens.
