The Gyeonggi Provincial Government has announced the selection of three potential sites for the construction of a new international airport, aiming to alleviate congestion at existing airports and boost the region's economic growth.
The three shortlisted locations are the Hwaseongho reclaimed land in Hwaseong City, Seotanneon in Pyeongtaek City, and Mogamyeon in Icheon City. These sites were chosen after a comprehensive evaluation of various factors such as airspace, noise levels, terrain, and accessibility, in accordance with international standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
The decision comes after a thorough study conducted by the provincial government to identify suitable locations for the new airport. The study found that all three shortlisted sites have a benefit-cost ratio of over 1.0, indicating economic viability.
The need for a new airport in Gyeonggi Province is driven by the region's growing population and increasing demand for air travel, particularly for business and freight. With a projected population of 14.79 million by 2040, Gyeonggi Province accounts for a significant portion of the country's air travel demand. Additionally, the province is home to a thriving semiconductor and mobility industry, and a new airport is expected to further enhance its global competitiveness.
The provincial government plans to conduct further studies to develop detailed development plans for the areas surrounding each potential airport site. The aim is to create airport economic zones centered around advanced industries, such as semiconductors and mobility, and to attract foreign investment.
