The Badminton Association of Korea has vehemently denied allegations of wrongdoing after the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) accused the association of violating government funding regulations. In a press release issued, the association stated that it had followed all relevant guidelines and procedures in its operations.
The MCST had previously accused the association of misusing government funds, including allegations of purchasing shuttlecocks through informal contracts and distributing equipment to a local badminton association without proper authorization. These actions, according to the MCST, constituted violations of the government funding law.
In response, the Badminton Association has maintained that all its actions were in compliance with the regulations set by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, as well as the Korea Sports Council. The association has also emphasized that it has completed audits by certified public accountants to verify its compliance.
Key points of the association's defense include:
Compliance with regulations: The association claims that it has strictly adhered to all government guidelines and procedures.
Audits: The association has conducted audits to verify its financial management and compliance with regulations.
Efforts to improve: The association has acknowledged the need for reform and has initiated steps to address the issues raised by the MCST, such as improving communication with athletes and revising outdated regulations.
While the association has denied any wrongdoing, the MCST has maintained its stance and has requested the Sports Integrity Commission to remove the association's president. The dispute between the two parties highlights ongoing concerns about the governance and transparency of sports organizations in Korea.
