Commendations for contributors to autonomous fisheries and harmony events held… Pledge for sustainable fisheries development
Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province held the "4th Jeonbuk Self-Governing Province Autonomous Fisheries Harmonious Gathering" at the Gochang-gun Indoor Gymnasium on the 5th, with about 300 participants, including members of autonomous fisheries communities across the province.
The event brought together major guests and fishermen to foster unity and solidarity, including Ko Jeong-sam, Deputy Governor for Physical AI Economy of Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province; Shim Deok-seob, Mayor of Gochang-gun; Kim Dong-gu, Chairman of the Economic, Industry and Construction Committee of the Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province Council; Kim Sung-soo, Chairman of the Culture, Safety and Construction Committee; and Provincial Council Member Kim Jeong-gang.
Hosted and organized by the Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province Federation of Korea Autonomous Fisheries and the Gochang-gun Branch, the event featured a commemorative ceremony, awards for contributors, celebratory performances, and a harmony festival. In particular, commendations were awarded to individuals who contributed to revitalizing autonomous fisheries and managing and protecting fishery resources, encouraging their efforts.
Autonomous fisheries are activities in which fishermen voluntarily manage fishery resources and improve fishing ground environments to promote sustainable fisheries and increase income. In Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province, the initiative began in 2001 with 7 communities and now involves about 3,700 members across 58 communities.
Each community carries out activities to restore fishery resources and improve fishing ground environments, such as releasing aquatic seeds, collecting discarded fishing gear, and exterminating marine pest organisms. They are also striving to enhance the self-reliant capacity of fishing villages through cooperation among fishermen.
Ko Jeong-sam, Deputy Governor for Physical AI Economy of Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province, stated, "Amid difficult conditions such as climate change and fluctuations in fishery resources, the role of autonomous fisheries—where fishermen protect and manage fishery resources on their own—is becoming even more important," adding, "We will listen closely to voices from the field and continue to provide support for strengthening the capabilities of autonomous fisheries communities and increasing fishermen's income."
