The Itaipu Hydroelectric Power Plant, one of the world's largest hydroelectric dams located on the border between Paraguay and Brazil, has achieved an unprecedented cumulative power production of 3.1 billion megawatt-hours (MWh). This remarkable milestone was reached 41 years after the plant began operations in 1984, setting a historic record that no other hydroelectric plant in the world has ever accomplished.

This immense amount of energy is enough to supply the entire world for 44 days, all of Paraguay for 140 years, and Brazil for 6 years and 1 month. This new record comes just 18 months after reaching the 3 billion MWh mark on March 10, 2024, once again proving Itaipu's consistent production capability. At this pace, it is projected to hit another milestone of 4 billion MWh by 2039.

The Itaipu plant began its first commercial operation on May 5, 1984. It took 17 years to produce the first 1 billion MWh, but only 11 years and 2 months to reach 2 billion MWh, and 11 years and 7 months to hit 3 billion MWh. This steady increase in production speed demonstrates the continuous improvement in the plant's operational efficiency.

Beyond its sheer production volume, the Itaipu plant is globally recognized as a prime example of clean and renewable energy generation. In August 2025, the plant's generator availability rate reached 96.02%, surpassing its target of 94%. This is a testament to the plant's superior technical expertise and maintenance capabilities.

The Itaipu plant's role in supplying Paraguay's electricity is becoming increasingly significant. From January to August 2025, the amount of electricity supplied to Paraguay's National Electricity Administration (ANDE) was 16,189 GWh, a substantial increase from 13,633 GWh during the same period in 2024. This shows that the plant is reliably meeting Paraguay's growing energy demand. Of the 5,114 GWh of electricity produced in August 2025 alone, 2,064 GWh were supplied to Paraguay, enough to cover approximately 22 months of the country's demand.
