Seoul, South Korea – Homeplus, South Korea's second-largest hypermarket chain, is facing a wave of supply disruptions and growing labor unrest as it enters corporate rehabilitation proceedings. Major electronics and food suppliers have halted deliveries, and employees are protesting potential job losses.

Supply Chain Disruption:

LG Electronics has temporarily suspended shipments to Homeplus due to concerns over payment risks. Samsung Electronics is reportedly monitoring the situation closely and preparing contingency plans. Major food companies, including Ottogi, Dongsuh Food, and Lotte Chilsung Beverage, have also halted deliveries of certain products. One food industry representative warned of a potential full-scale halt if payments are not received promptly.

Financial Reassurance and Challenges:

Homeplus has attempted to reassure suppliers by announcing the resumption of payments for general trade receivables. The company claims to have a cash reserve of 309 billion won and anticipates an additional 300 billion won in cash flow from March operations. However, the need for court approval for any expenditures is expected to cause delays in payments to suppliers and tenants.

SMEs that heavily rely on Homeplus are facing significant challenges. Delays in payments could severely impact their cash flow and threaten their survival.

Store Closures and Labor Protests:

Homeplus is scheduled to close its Naedang branch in Daegu this fall, adding to employee concerns about job security. Labor unions are demanding accountability from majority shareholder MBK Partners, alleging that the company has eliminated nearly 6,000 jobs over the past decade. Currently, Homeplus employs 20,000 direct employees and supports an additional 100,000 workers through its partnerships.

Union Condemnation:

Members of the Mart Industry Workers' Union and the Homeplus branch of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions held a press conference in front of MBK's offices, accusing the private equity firm of dismantling Homeplus.
