The number of companies occupying the Namdong National Industrial Complex, the largest industrial complex in the Seoul metropolitan area, has steadily increased over the past four years, while the number of workers has decreased.
According to the Incheon Regional Headquarters of the Korea Industrial Complex Corporation, the number of companies in the Namdong Industrial Complex was 8,034 as of September last year, a 15% increase compared to 2020. This is almost three times the 2,934 companies in 1998, when related statistics began to be compiled.
The total annual production of occupant companies also showed an increasing trend, from 26.8335 trillion won in 2020 to 32.7484 trillion won in 2023.
However, the number of workers in the Namdong Industrial Complex has steadily decreased over the past five years, from 103,086 in 2020 to 83,721 in 2024.
The Korea Industrial Complex Corporation analyzed that the number of employees decreased despite the increase in the number of occupant companies as the manufacturing efficiency of factories increased due to the smartization of manufacturing processes.
Meanwhile, the proportion of companies in the Namdong Industrial Complex that were closed or closed down did not show a significant difference, at 0.7% in 2020, 0.9% in 2022, and 1% in 2024.
An official from the Incheon Regional Headquarters of the Korea Industrial Complex Corporation said, "We are working to transform closed or closed company sites and idle land in the Namdong Industrial Complex into innovative spaces." He added, "We will grow the industrial complex through active investment attraction using private and public funds."
