Seoul, South Korea – In a decisive move to combat the escalating drug crisis, the South Korean government has announced a comprehensive, multi-agency crackdown on drug-related offenses, set to commence next month. The operation will focus on high-risk areas such as entertainment venues, airports, and seaports. In a significant technological advancement, the government will also introduce an AI-powered monitoring system to eradicate online drug trafficking and advertising.

The announcement was made following a "Public Safety Crime Review Meeting" held at the National Police Agency, presided over by Acting President and Deputy Prime Minister Choi Sang-mok, where the 2025 Drug Control Implementation Plan was finalized.

Key Highlights of the Crackdown:

Intensified Joint Operations:A two-month joint operation will begin next month, with a second phase planned for the latter half of the year.

The government will conduct similar operations twice annually, targeting vulnerable areas such as airports, seaports, entertainment districts, and regions with high concentrations of undocumented foreign residents.

Specific high-risk periods, including the start of the academic year (March-April), poppy cultivation and cannabis harvesting season (April-July), summer vacation (June-August), and the year-end holiday period (October-December), will be prioritized.
Enhanced Law Enforcement Capabilities:The Supreme Prosecutors' Office will introduce portable mobile forensic equipment by June to aid on-site investigations.
Dedicated online drug trafficking response teams will be established within the prosecution and police forces.

The Supreme Prosecutors' Office will form an "Online Drug Trafficking Specialized Investigation Team," comprising dedicated prosecutors and investigators, by the first half of the year.
The National Police Agency's existing "Dark Web Investigation Team" will be rebranded as the "Online Investigation Team" this month.
AI-Driven Monitoring System:The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety will implement "AI Cops," an AI-powered system designed to automatically detect online drug advertisements and sales posts, by the end of the year.
