SEOUL – KakaoTalk, South Korea’s leading mobile messenger, is embarking on a significant transformation of its platform, introducing AI-powered assistance and a dedicated content discovery zone to combat stagnant user engagement. Facing pressure from other popular apps like YouTube, KakaoTalk aims to evolve beyond its chat-centric model and capture a greater share of users’ time.
The company is launching “AI Mate,” an intelligent assistant that provides personalized recommendations for gifts and locations based on user requests. Initially available as a KakaoTalk channel, AI Mate is expected to be integrated into other Kakao services in the future. This personalized approach reflects KakaoTalk’s strategy to enhance user experience and drive engagement within its broader ecosystem.
In addition to AI Mate, KakaoTalk is unveiling the “Discovery Area,” a new feature designed to showcase diverse content formats, including images and short-form videos, in a scrollable feed. This content hub aims to encourage content discovery, user participation, and increased time spent within the app.
KakaoTalk faces the critical challenge of shifting user behavior beyond its core messaging function. Currently, its app usage time is considerably lower than that of platforms like YouTube, impacting its advertising revenue potential. The company must successfully engage users with its new offerings and demonstrate value beyond simple communication.
However, KakaoTalk has high hopes for its new initiatives. By leveraging AI and diverse content, the company anticipates delivering highly personalized services and driving increased user engagement. These efforts are expected to translate into longer app sessions, improved profitability, and a strengthened position as the dominant messaging platform in South Korea. The success of these initiatives will be crucial for KakaoTalk to maintain its competitive edge in the rapidly evolving digital landscape.
