Singapore and India have taken a significant step towards fostering environmentally friendly and innovative maritime practices by signing a Letter of Intent (LOI) for cooperation in the digitalization and decarbonization of maritime transport. This collaboration took place during Singapore Maritime Week 2025.

The core objective of this partnership is to establish the 'Singapore-India Green and Digital Shipping Corridor (GDSC)' to accelerate the development and adoption of zero-emission technologies and digital solutions within the maritime sector.

On March 25th, Teo Eng Dih, Chief Executive of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), and R. Lakshmanan, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MOPSW) of India, signed the LOI. The signing ceremony was graced by Amy Khor, Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment and Transport of Singapore, and Sarbananda Sonowal, Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways of India.

Key Areas of Cooperation and Expected Effects

Under this agreement, both countries will collaborate on projects for the digitalization and decarbonization of maritime transport, identify key stakeholders, and work towards formalizing the partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This partnership aims to leverage the strengths of both nations to innovate the maritime industry and ensure a future where sustainability and digital transformation go hand in hand.

In particular, India, a leader in information technology, has significant potential to grow as a major producer and exporter of green maritime fuels. On the other hand, Singapore is a key global transshipment and bunkering hub with a dynamic research and innovation ecosystem.

The collaboration between the two countries provides a unique opportunity to share expertise, resources, and knowledge to create a cutting-edge shipping corridor that prioritizes sustainability and digital transformation.

The Singapore-India GDSC will focus on strengthening cooperation between the two countries to accelerate the development of zero or near-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emission technologies and promote the adoption of digital solutions in the maritime industry. This partnership will not only benefit both countries but also contribute to global efforts to reduce the environmental impact of shipping and improve operational efficiency through technology.
