LOS ANGELES, CA - Pop superstar Katy Perry is set to embark on a journey to the edge of space aboard Blue Origin's New Shepard spacecraft, joining an all-female crew for the company's 11th human spaceflight.
Blue Origin, the space exploration company founded by Amazon's Jeff Bezos, announced on Tuesday that Perry will be among the six women on the upcoming mission. The crew also includes Bezos' fiancée, Lauren Sánchez, and renowned CBS Mornings anchor, Gayle King. Other participants are aerospace engineer Aisha Bowe, film producer Kariann Flavin, and bioastronautics researcher and civil rights advocate Amanda Nguyen.
"This mission marks the first all-female crewed spaceflight since Valentina Tereshkova's solo mission in 1963," Blue Origin stated in a press release.
The New Shepard spacecraft is scheduled to launch this spring, though the exact date has not been disclosed. The mission will take the crew beyond the Kármán line, the internationally recognized boundary of space at an altitude of 100 kilometers (62 miles), where they will experience several minutes of weightlessness.
Perry, known for her chart-topping hits like "Roar," "Firework," "Dark Horse," and "Teenage Dream," has achieved nine number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. She joins a growing list of celebrities and high-profile individuals who have taken part in Blue Origin's suborbital spaceflights, including Bezos himself.
Since its first human flight in July 2021, Blue Origin has carried 52 people to the edge of space. The company aims to make space travel more accessible and inspire future generations of scientists and engineers.
This mission is a significant milestone for Blue Origin and a testament to the growing interest in space tourism. As the company continues to push the boundaries of space exploration, it is paving the way for a future where more people can experience the wonder of spaceflight.
