The recent surge in unusual weather patterns, including heavy snowfall in March, is driving up agricultural prices and raising concerns about potential food inflation as the peak farming season approaches. According to the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation (aT), as of March 23rd, the price of cabbage in Chuncheon reached 6,222 won, a 37.7% increase compared to the average price of 4,518 won. This price is also 100 won higher than the national average of 6,121 won. Similarly, the price of cabbage has risen by 42%, trading at 7,065 won, while radish prices have soared by 79.7% to 3,672 won, compared to the average. Carrot prices have also seen a significant increase of 54.5%, reaching 6,477 won.
The primary cause of this surge in agricultural prices is attributed to the recent unusual weather patterns. The production of winter cabbage, cabbage, radish, and carrots has decreased by approximately 10% compared to last year, largely due to the prolonged high temperatures during the planting and sowing seasons. The cold wave that hit Jeju Island, a major winter vegetable production area, also contributed to poor crop growth. In particular, the production of winter cabbage and radish has decreased by 10-16% due to reduced cultivation areas, leading to a sharp price increase. The ongoing unusual weather, including the March snowfall, is expected to impact spring crop prices, and the high vegetable prices are projected to continue for at least another month.
