Apple’s First Foldable Smartphone Launch in South Korea Pushed Past October, Staggering Timeline with iPhone 18

The domestic release of Apple's highly anticipated first foldable iPhone is expected to be postponed until late October or early November. Due to initial production volumes falling short of overall demand, priority allocation is likely to go to North American and primary regional markets. Consequently, a direct head-to-head clash with Samsung Electronics, which has long dominated the domestic foldable phone market, has been temporarily delayed.
Apple is hosting a special product launch event at its headquarters in Cupertino, California. Alongside the standard iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max models, the company is widely expected to unveil its maiden foldable smartphone, heavily rumored to be named the "iPhone Fold" or "iPhone Ultra", featuring a horizontal book-type wide form factor.
While the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max have included South Korea in their first-wave release group—slated to kick off pre-orders shortly—the foldable variant faces a starkly different trajectory. Because of lagging shipment volume and production bottlenecks, a noticeable gap has emerged between the product's official announcement and its actual retail availability. Industry insiders project that it will take at least one to two months post-unveiling for units to clear customs and arrive in local channels.
A local telecommunications representative noted that current pre-order operations exclude the foldable device entirely. Major carriers are instead mapping out marketing frameworks under the assumption that commercial sales will materialize between late October and early November.
Global rollout timelines remain fluid for similar reasons. Supply chain analysts point out that Apple has encountered hurdles in securing stable yields for specialized hinges and foldable OLED panels. Reports indicate that daily production numbers ahead of the unveiling have hovered in the low hundreds—far below the tens of thousands required for a smooth global blitz—forcing Apple to enforce stringent quality control checks on surface flatness and multi-fold durability.
This manufacturing lag grants Samsung Electronics a vital window to preserve the sales momentum of its Galaxy Z8 Fold series through the second half of the year. Initial forecasts by market research firms like Counterpoint Research previously suggested that Apple could capture up to 25 percent of the global foldable market in its debut year, potentially cutting into Samsung’s traditional market share. However, production bottlenecks and staggered regional releases mean Samsung’s uncontested leadership will likely persist a bit longer.
Domestically, the ripple effects are equally pronounced. South Korea's foldable ecosystem has remained effectively exclusive to Samsung’s Galaxy Z lineup. Because Apple's entry represents the first viable pathway for iOS loyalists to transition into a foldable form factor without abandoning Apple's software ecosystem, the launch timing serves as a critical watershed for industry market share.
In response to the delay, South Korea’s major mobile carriers have structured a two-phase promotional strategy for the autumn season. Sales efforts will initially focus entirely on driving momentum for the mainstream iPhone 18 Pro lineup, while heavy marketing investments for the foldable flagship will be reserved for its eventual arrival later in the autumn.
