A bizarre and alarming incident unfolded in the heart of Washington, D.C., when a wooden guillotine was discovered in the bed of a pickup truck parked near the U.S. Capitol and the Supreme Court. The United States Capitol Police (USCP) acted swiftly to seize the medieval execution device and take the driver into custody, highlighting growing security concerns surrounding federal lawmakers and government facilities. 

According to law enforcement authorities, the incident occurred on the afternoon of August 25, 2026. Officers noticed a pickup truck parked illegally along the 100 block of East Capitol Street, a high-security area close to the U.S. Capitol, the Supreme Court, and the Library of Congress. Upon inspecting the vehicle, police were startled to find a full-sized, wooden guillotine standing upright in the truck's open bed. 

The driver of the vehicle was identified as 35-year-old Philan-Tam-Duy Le, a resident of Julian, a small town in San Diego County, California. Investigators revealed that Le had driven the entire distance across the United States from California to the nation's capital with the towering execution apparatus exposed in his truck bed. He was immediately arrested and charged with carrying a dangerous weapon. 

While federal and local authorities continue to investigate the exact motives behind the transcontinental trip, family members have offered some insight into the suspect's mindset. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Le’s brother, Calvin, explained that the guillotine was intended to serve purely as a "symbol of frustration". He emphasized that his brother is not someone who would physically harm others. According to Calvin, Philan-Tam-Duy Le harbored deep and generalized dissatisfaction with the current American political climate. He reportedly felt disillusioned with both major political parties, expressing equal disdain for Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom and Republican figures like Donald Trump. 

Although the U.S. Congress was in recess at the time of the arrest—meaning lawmakers were not inside the Capitol building—the incident has nonetheless amplified anxieties regarding public safety. Media outlets like CNN noted that the event underscores a sharp escalation in hostile rhetoric and security threats directed at members of Congress, congressional staffers, and federal officials. 

Data released by the U.S. Capitol Police illustrates this troubling trend. In the preceding year alone, the department handled approximately 15,000 separate reports involving concerning statements, aggressive behavior, or direct communications targeting federal legislators, their families, and Capitol complex infrastructure. This figure represents a staggering increase of over 57% compared to statistics from 2024, emphasizing the volatile environment in which security forces operate.
