LOS ANGELES — A joyous celebration for the New York Knicks' NBA Championship victory turned into a horrific tragedy in Canoga Park, Los Angeles, on June 13, when a pet dog was shot and killed by police officers responding to a false alarm.
Authorities from the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) were dispatched to an apartment following a 911 report of a "woman screaming." Upon arrival, however, officers discovered that the reported screams were actually the sounds of a fan cheering in celebration of the Knicks’ championship win.
According to the family and witnesses, the situation escalated rapidly when the apartment door opened and the family’s two-year-old poodle, "Jameson," ran out. Despite the dog being small, an officer opened fire, killing the animal instantly. Reports noted that the dog was wearing a New York Knicks-themed jersey at the time of its death.
A viral video circulating on social media captures the heartbreaking aftermath, showing the devastated owner cradling her deceased dog while surrounded by a dozen police officers. One neighbor is heard shouting at the police in the video, condemning their actions as an excessive use of force.
The LAPD issued a statement claiming that the dog was "large," had been barking aggressively, and charged at an officer after the door was reopened, making the shooting an "officer-involved shooting (OIS)" that they deemed unavoidable.
However, the victim's family and local civil rights groups, including the Los Angeles National Action Network (LANAN), are pushing back against the department's narrative. They are demanding the immediate release of all body camera footage and the identities of the officers involved. Najee Ali, a lead organizer at LANAN, described the incident as an "unnecessary and unjustifiable act of excessive force."
The incident has sparked widespread public outrage, with the story garnering millions of views across platforms like TikTok. In an outpouring of support, a GoFundMe campaign set up to cover the costs of the dog’s funeral has raised over $125,000, exceeding its original goal tenfold.
As the local community continues to mourn the loss of Jameson, pressure is mounting on the LAPD to ensure transparency and accountability in the ongoing investigation.
