SEOUL – The Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) has issued an advisory to consumers, emphasizing the importance of fully understanding the terms and conditions of mobile phone insurance policies before signing up. This comes after a number of cases where consumers were surprised by unexpected out-of-pocket expenses when filing claims for repairs.
One such case involved a policyholder, Mr. Park, who recently had to pay 450,000 won to repair his damaged phone. Despite having a policy with a coverage limit of 250,000 won, he expected the entire amount to be covered. However, the insurance company refused, citing a clause in the contract that stipulated compensation would be the lesser of the actual repair cost or the coverage limit. Additionally, the insurer stated that even within the covered amount, a 30% deductible would be applied.
The FSS explained that most mobile phone insurance policies include a deductible, which can be a fixed percentage of the repair cost or a set amount. This means that even if the repair cost is within the coverage limit, the policyholder will still have to pay a portion of it.
The advisory also highlighted other important points:
Official Repair Centers: Insurance companies typically only cover repairs done at authorized service centers. Repairs done at third-party shops may not be eligible for reimbursement.
Coverage Limit Reduction: Some policies may reduce the coverage limit by the amount of any previous claims paid out.
Compensation for Loss: In case of theft or loss, the insurance company may provide a replacement phone of the same model or a comparable one. However, if the replacement phone is of higher value, the policyholder may have to pay the difference.
Travel Insurance: If a phone is damaged while traveling, it may be covered by a travel insurance policy instead of, or in addition to, the mobile phone insurance.
The FSS urges consumers to carefully review the terms and conditions of their mobile phone insurance policies, including the coverage limits, deductibles, and any other restrictions, to avoid unexpected costs when filing a claim.
