In an era of digital isolation, Chungcheongnam-do is pioneering innovative ways to rebuild social connections. In collaboration with the Chungnam Local Community Activation Center, the provincial government hosted an orientation session for its regional reading community and independent publishing support project, "Reading with All Your Might" (Il-neun Him-kkeot). Held at the "Areum" Chungnam Community Platform in Onyangoncheon Station, the initiative brings residents together to read, discuss, and co-create independent publications.

Fostering Community Bonds through Literature

The project is designed to use literature as a medium for human connection. Rather than reading alone, participants form local reading circles to share thoughts on books and life. Crucially, the project goes beyond standard book clubs by encouraging participants to document their activities and produce small-scale independent publications.

During the orientation, teams shared their expectations and participated in writing lectures to learn independent publishing techniques. Organizers also provided essential guidelines on grant execution and transparent budget management, ensuring smooth project operations.

The Value of Small-Scale Publishing and Social Impact

This project aligns with the province's broader strategy to enhance regional vitality and bridge generational gaps. By encouraging residents of all ages to read and converse together, the initiative addresses modern social issues like loneliness and isolation.

The resulting "small publications" capture the authentic lives, local histories, and unique experiences of ordinary residents. These books act as community archives that preserve local narratives and foster civic pride across municipalities.

Lee Jong-pil, Director-General of the Social Solidarity Economy Bureau of Chungcheongnam-do, emphasized the project's significance: "Sustainable development is achieved when residents form solidarity, share their life experiences, and mutually recognize one another. Through community-centered reading, we aim to enhance humanistic competencies and build a warm, caring Chungcheongnam-do rooted in traditional values of respect and consideration."

As the project progresses, it stands as a model for community regeneration, proving that books can serve as bridges to a more empathetic and connected society.
