Daegu, South Korea – Daegu City has taken a significant step towards expanding its water industry into the African market by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Ethiopia. The agreement, signed on November 28th, brings together Daegu City, Ethiopia's Urban Infrastructure Development Ministry, the Korea Environment Corporation, the National Water Industry Cluster Enterprise Association, and the Ethiopiabet Foundation.

A Saturated Domestic Market and the Lure of Africa

With the domestic water market reaching saturation, Daegu City has been actively seeking opportunities for its water companies in overseas markets. Africa, with its pressing water scarcity issues, presents a promising avenue for growth.

Ethiopia Looks to Korea for Water Solutions

Ethiopia, facing challenges in providing adequate water supply and sanitation, is keen on adopting Korea's advanced water technologies. The MOU is expected to facilitate technology transfer and enable Daegu's water companies to penetrate the Ethiopian market.

Key Points of the MOU

Ethiopia: Will identify and propose cooperative projects for the development of its water industry.
Korea Environment Corporation: Will provide support in terms of infrastructure and technology at the National Water Industry Cluster, and participate in joint research and cooperative projects with domestic water companies.
National Water Industry Cluster Enterprise Association: Will recommend suitable companies for cooperative projects and provide support for smooth implementation.
Daegu City: Will provide administrative support to facilitate the smooth progress of cooperative projects.
