New York, October 5, 2025 — A unique public art initiative celebrating Hangeul, the Korean alphabet, is culminating its tour of major East Coast university cities this week, finishing with a grand finale in New York City's Times Square on Hangeul Day, October 9th. The project, titled "Hangeul Truck: Connecting the Future, Embracing Hangeul," uses a traveling vehicle as a platform for digital media art, reinterpreting the alphabet's founding principles—empathy, communication, and equality—for the digital age.

Interactive Art Promotes Korean Script on Campus

Organized by the Korean Cultural Center New York (KCCNY) and the Ik-Joong Kang Foundation, and sponsored by Samsung Electronics, the Hangeul Truck project launched its journey on September 26th at Harvard University in Boston (Cambridge). It subsequently visited cities hosting Ivy League institutions, including Brown University (Providence, September 29th), Yale University (New Haven, September 30th), and the University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, October 2nd).

The tour continued with stops scheduled for Princeton University (Princeton, October 6th) and Cornell University (Ithaca, October 8th). The six-city itinerary is set to conclude on October 9th in Manhattan's Times Square, coinciding with Hangeul Day—the official South Korean observance celebrating the creation of the script.

The Hangeul Truck is an innovative mobile public art installation featuring an LED media wall and large-scale artwork by the internationally recognized Korean-American artist Ik-Joong Kang. At each stop, students are invited to engage directly with the art. They create and submit personal messages about their dreams and hopes via Direct Message (DM), which are then instantly transformed and displayed as Hangeul media art on the truck's exterior. This real-time visual transformation offers participants an interactive experience that highlights the aesthetic beauty and structural logic of the Korean writing system.

Artist Envisions 'Democracy on the Road'

Artist Ik-Joong Kang, known for his collaborative and large-scale public art, described the project as a realization of "open art" that avoids the confines of traditional exhibition spaces. "The Hangeul Truck is mobile public art and a 'democracy on the road.' It doesn't stay in a museum or gallery but travels through cities and campuses, making it freely accessible to everyone," Kang stated.

He drew a parallel between the 15th-century creation of Hangeul by King Sejong for the benefit of the common people and the modern digital interaction facilitated by the truck. "Hangeul, the script King Sejong created for the people, is now meeting the Direct Messages of the future generation to give birth to the Hangeul Truck," Kang explained.

Kang, whose work often incorporates Hangeul and reflects themes of peace and interconnectedness, expressed an ambitious long-term vision. He suggested that the truck is only an initial step, stating, "I dream of one day moving past the Hangeul airplane to the 'Hangeul Spaceship' that South and North Korea will jointly launch into space."

The Hangeul Truck Project successfully merged cutting-edge digital technology with the core values of the Korean alphabet, offering a compelling public spectacle and an educational experience that engages the next generation of global leaders with Korean culture and its spirit of communication and human connection.
