Two Fatalities in Itapúa's Captain Mesa Following Bus-Motorcycle Collision; Passenger Describes "Horrific Moments"

Captain Mesa, Itapúa, Paraguay – A tragic bus-motorcycle collision in the Captain Mesa district of Itapúa Department resulted in the deaths of two individuals. A passenger aboard the bus at the time of the accident has vividly recounted the harrowing details and the terrifying moments experienced during the incident.

Details of the Accident and Casualties

Pablo Jaime was a passenger on an Itaipu Poty Transport bus traveling on National Route PY06 at the 95-kilometer mark in Captain Mesa when it collided with a motorcycle and overturned into a ditch at approximately 4:30 AM. Mr. Jaime was en route to Encarnación, with plans to cross the border into Posadas thereafter.

In an interview with radio station Monumental 1080 AM, Mr. Jaime stated, "I was dozing comfortably when suddenly there was a tremendous impact, and the bus began to shake violently. When I regained my senses, we were already rolling over several times, falling down an embankment."

According to the report from Police Station No. 79, located 32 kilometers from Captain Mesa, approximately 20 passengers were on the bus at the time of the accident. Among them, four sustained injuries of varying degrees. Tragically, the bus driver and the motorcyclist died at the scene. They have been identified by Última Hora correspondent Antonio Rolín as Alejandro Romero and Jorge Arnaldo Gavilán Martínez, respectively.

"Escaped Through the Window... Over Ten Minutes of Sheer Terror"

"People were screaming and calling for help, but we had no idea where we were or what had happened," Mr. Jaime recounted with a tremor in his voice. "I managed to escape through a window, using branches that had entered the bus to pull myself out. It was a truly horrific tragedy, a terrifying experience I will never forget."

After escaping the bus, he made his way to the road to seek assistance, but the surroundings were completely dark. Fortunately, passing vehicles stopped and alerted the fire department and police.

Mr. Jaime then went back towards the bus and was deeply worried about a potential fire as the engine was still running. "From that moment on, I endured about ten to fifteen minutes of absolute terror," he recalled.

Injured Passengers Hospitalized and Authorities Investigate

The injured passengers were transported to the María Auxiliadora Hospital. The list of injured includes Emergegildo López, 55 years old, resident of María Auxiliadora; María de los Santos Vera, 60 years old, from Raúl Peña; Lis Sanguina, 28 years old, resident of María Auxiliadora; and Fredy Vera, 19 years old, from the Raúl Peña area.

Officers from the local police station, the prosecutor's office, forensic doctors, and the scientific police arrived at the scene to investigate the precise cause and circumstances of the accident.
