Meta Platforms is reportedly in discussions to acquire FuriosaAI, a South Korean AI chip design startup. The acquisition could help Meta develop its own AI chips and reduce its reliance on Nvidia.
FuriosaAI is a fabless startup that develops AI inference chips for data center servers. The company was founded in 2017 by Baek Jun-ho, a former engineer at Samsung Electronics and AMD.
FuriosaAI has released two AI chips, Warboy in 2021 and Renegade in 2022. The company has attracted interest from several companies, including Meta.
Meta is reportedly interested in acquiring FuriosaAI to develop its own AI chips. Meta currently spends a significant amount of money on purchasing AI chips from Nvidia. The company is also working with Broadcom to develop custom AI chips.
Meta has announced that it plans to invest up to $65 billion in AI and new data centers in 2023.
FuriosaAI has raised approximately $115 million in funding to date. Investors in the company include Naver and DSC Investment.
The acquisition of FuriosaAI could give Meta a competitive advantage in the AI chip market. The company could use FuriosaAI's technology to develop its own custom AI chips that are optimized for its specific needs. This could help Meta save money and improve the performance of its AI systems.
The acquisition of FuriosaAI is still under discussion and may not be completed. However, it is a sign that Meta is serious about developing its own AI chips.
