TAIPEI, Taiwan – The Taiwanese government has banned the use of Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot DeepSeek by public sector employees, citing concerns about potential data leaks and national security risks.
The ban, announced by the Taiwanese Digital Ministry on Monday, applies to all central and local government agencies, public schools, state-owned enterprises, and other quasi-public institutions. It also extends to individuals working on major infrastructure projects and government-funded foundations.
The ministry stated that DeepSeek's AI, being a Chinese service, poses a risk of data leakage that could jeopardize national security. The decision was made in accordance with a 2019 regulation that restricts the use of products that could potentially threaten national cybersecurity.
While the ministry has announced the ban, it has not yet provided specific details on how it will be implemented or enforced.
Taiwan's move follows similar actions taken by other countries around the world. Italy's data protection authority has launched an investigation into DeepSeek and has blocked access to the chatbot for its users. The UK and Germany have also initiated investigations into DeepSeek.
The Taiwanese government's decision highlights growing concerns about the potential risks associated with using AI technology developed by Chinese companies.
