NEW DELHI – India has officially submitted an "expression of interest" to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, signaling a significant step in the nation's broader ambition to secure the 2036 Olympic Games. This move comes as India aims to leverage the Commonwealth Games as a crucial dress rehearsal for the much larger Olympic event.
India, which has yet to host an Olympic Games, previously staged the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi. Despite the event's overall success, the lead-up was marred by allegations of corruption and mismanagement. However, the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, the centerpiece of the 12-day sporting event, stood as a testament to the nation's capacity to host major international competitions.
"We have sent an expression of interest, and we are hopeful the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) will consider our proposal," stated P.T. Usha, President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), to Reuters.
India is optimistic about securing the 2030 edition, particularly given the recent challenges faced by the Commonwealth Games in finding host cities. The 2026 Games were shifted to Glasgow, Scotland, after the original host, the Australian state of Victoria, withdrew due to escalating costs. Similarly, the 2022 Games were moved to Birmingham after Durban, South Africa, pulled out due to financial constraints.
The CGF has set a deadline of March 31 for bids, and they have confirmed that the process is ongoing. "The process was ongoing and it would provide details 'in due course'," the CGF said in an email to Reuters.
Beyond the Commonwealth Games, India's ambitions extend to the 2036 Olympics, with Ahmedabad in Gujarat at the forefront of the nation's plans. The city is central to India's vision of hosting the "greatest show on earth."
By successfully hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games, India aims to demonstrate its capability and readiness to take on the even greater challenge of the Olympic Games, solidifying its position as a major player in the global sporting arena.
