Mokpo, a city known for its beautiful coastline and rich history, has also become a pilgrimage site for dessert lovers. The city’s old downtown, particularly the area near Mokpo Station, is a treasure trove of bakeries and sweet shops, drawing visitors from across the country in search of the perfect treat.
The epicenter of this sweet revolution is just a five-minute walk from Mokpo Station, where two legendary bakeries stand face to face. The venerable Korombang Bakery, a Mokpo institution since 1949, is celebrated as one of Korea's top five bakeries. Its signature offerings, the shrimp, cream cheese, and garlic baguettes, have earned a loyal following for their unique and unforgettable flavors. Right across the street, its friendly rival, CLB Bakery, is equally famous for its own rich cream cheese baguette, which locals recommend enjoying slightly chilled.
Beyond the iconic baguettes, Mokpo’s dessert scene offers an array of unique experiences. The Coffee Changgo-ro cafe, with locations in the Peace Plaza and Bukhang areas, has recently gone viral for its life-changing egg tarts. Unlike many others, its tarts are lauded for a perfectly crisp, flaky crust and a silky-smooth custard filling that's sweet without tasting like steamed egg.
For a taste of tradition, visitors can seek out Ssuk-ggul-le, a unique local dessert. These bite-sized rice cakes, made with mugwort and red bean powder, are served soaked in a mildly sweet rice syrup, offering a soft and comforting flavor that is a delightful alternative to standard pastries.
Another must-visit destination is Songjart, a cafe that has creatively restored and repurposed nine historic buildings, including an old rice mill and an oil press factory. This unique setting, filled with the owner's extensive collection of antiques, provides a special atmosphere for enjoying popular menu items like the Mont Blanc and salt bread.
Whether you're exploring the historic streets or enjoying the night views at Peace Plaza, Mokpo’s sweet creations provide the perfect fuel for a memorable journey.
