The South Korean Ministry of Education has announced the approval of 76 AI digital textbooks that will be introduced in schools starting next year.

The ministry published a list of approved textbooks in the official gazette on [date], aligning with the 2022 revised curriculum. These digital textbooks will be implemented in mathematics, English, and information technology subjects for elementary school grades 3 and 4, middle school grade 1, and high school grade 1.

Unlike traditional paper-based textbooks, the development of digital textbooks required a deep understanding of digital technologies. Consequently, textbook publishers and edtech companies formed consortia to develop and submit textbooks for the approval process. Out of the 146 submitted textbooks, 76 were approved, resulting in an approval rate of 52.1%.

Key highlights of the approved textbooks include:

Elementary English: 14 textbooks from publishers such as Chunjae Education, Dong-A Publishing, Ice Cream Media, and WiBM-Enuma Korea were approved.
Elementary Mathematics: 12 textbooks, primarily from WiBM-Enuma Korea and Chunjae Education, were selected.
Middle School English: 10 textbooks from publishers including Bisang Education, ENI Nuryul, Jihak-sa, Mirae-n, and Dong-A Publishing were approved.
Middle School Mathematics: 4 textbooks were approved, with contributions from Bisang Education, Gyohak-sa, and Chunjae Education.
Middle School Information Technology: 2 textbooks were approved, developed by consortia including Bisang Education and Mirae-n.
High School General English: 20 textbooks were approved, with a diverse range of publishers participating.
High School General Mathematics: 12 textbooks were approved, including contributions from Bisang Education, WiBM, and Class Ting.
High School Information Technology: 2 textbooks were approved, developed by Chunjae Education and Geumseong Publishing.
