Daejeon Museum of Art (Director Yoon Eui-hyang) will hold the exhibition Immortal Painter Van Gogh from March 25 to June 22, featuring a carefully selected collection of 76 works from the Kröller-Müller Museum in the Netherlands.
This exhibition offers a meaningful opportunity to explore Van Gogh’s artistic world and life through his representative works. It holds particular significance as the first chance for a metropolitan city, following Seoul, to experience Van Gogh’s original paintings in person.
The exhibition is divided into five key periods of Van Gogh’s artistic journey, allowing visitors to trace his transformation and development at a glance.
The Dutch Period (1881-1885) marks Van Gogh’s initiation into becoming an artist, showcasing early works that realistically depict the lives of peasants and laborers. Representative pieces such as the drawing The Potato Eaters and the Head of a Woman series will be on display.
The Paris Period (1886-1888) is when Van Gogh established the foundation of his style, experimenting with color after encountering Impressionism. Works like Self-Portrait and Still Life with Flowers reveal the influence of his Paris experiences on his artistic world.
The Arles Period (1888-1889) is the time when many of Van Gogh’s major masterpieces were born, characterized by intense colors and dynamic brushstrokes. Visitors can experience his unique style through works including The Sower.
The Saint-Rémy Period (1889-1890) highlights his discovery of grand nature and the completion of his color paintings, reflecting his artistic passion despite mental instability. Pieces like Old Man in Sorrow (On the Threshold of Eternity) vividly capture his emotions and inner world.
The Auvers-sur-Oise Period (1890) presents works from the final phase of his life. Through pieces like Wheatfield Under Clouded Sky, visitors can witness the pinnacle of Van Gogh’s art, expressing nature and emotion.
