JEDDAH — The Jeddah Book Fair has captivated audiences with its dedicated Manga Arabia pavilion, showcasing a vibrant array of manga characters and comic books. This year’s fair, themed “Jeddah Reads,” has placed a significant emphasis on manga, with 26 stands dedicated to the popular genre.

Mahmoud Attar, an animation expert, noted the enduring influence of manga on Saudi culture. From classic series like “Duke Fleed” and “Treasure Island” to modern hits like “Detective Conan,” manga has been a staple in Saudi households for decades. This enduring popularity is a testament to the genre’s ability to engage audiences of all ages.
Fares Sambawa, a manga vendor, highlighted the global appeal of manga, attributing it to its ability to convey values and inspire young people. He emphasized the interconnected nature of the manga industry, from novels to manga adaptations and animated series.
The Future of Manga in the Arab World
A seminar titled “Manga: Between Word and Image” explored the potential of manga to shape the future of Arabic storytelling. Industry leaders Abbas Hamidaddin and Nouf Al-Hussein discussed the importance of creating Arabic content that resonates with young audiences.
Al-Hussein emphasized the role of manga in cultivating young people’s creativity and fostering a new generation of Saudi and Arab artists. She highlighted the potential of artificial intelligence to enhance the creative process and the importance of adhering to cultural values and ethics in manga adaptations.
Hamidaddin stressed the significance of manga in inspiring a love of reading and promoting Saudi culture on a global stage. He emphasized the need for a constant flow of fresh ideas and a commitment to sustainable growth to ensure the future of manga in the Arab world.
