Seoul, South Korea – SK Telecom (SKT), a leading South Korean telecommunications company, has announced its participation as a founding member of the MIT GenAI Impact Consortium. This consortium, launched by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), aims to explore the transformative impact of generative AI on society and industry.

SKT stands as the sole telecommunications company among the consortium's esteemed members, which include industry giants such as OpenAI, Coca-Cola, Tata Group, Analog Devices, and TWG Global Holdings. The consortium's primary objective is to provide practical guidance in the rapidly evolving AI landscape, addressing the uncertainties that come with this technology.

The consortium plans to select key projects this year and commence research, with the intention of publicly sharing its findings. This initiative aims to empower AI startups, providing them with a foundation to potentially reach the scale and influence of the "Magnificent 7" tech companies.

SKT's involvement will focus on strengthening the SK Group's overall AI competitiveness through joint research with MIT scholars and collaboration with OpenAI's founding members. The company aims to venture into next-generation AI research, including physical AI, which is considered the future of AI beyond generative AI. SKT has prioritized research in areas such as AI for manufacturing, physical AI, and bio AI, in addition to its existing AI personal assistant service, 'A.dot', and data center business.

Anantha Chandrakasan, Dean of Engineering and Chief Innovation and Strategy Officer at MIT, expressed his commitment to breaking down academic barriers and guiding the AI-driven global society towards a positive trajectory.
