SPHEREx: A Revolutionary Space Telescope Set to Unveil the Universe's Secrets

Embarking on a groundbreaking mission, the Space Infrared Explorer (SPHEREx), a next-generation space telescope jointly developed by NASA and the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI), is scheduled to launch into space later this month.

SPHEREx's primary objective is to conduct an all-sky survey in infrared light, capturing a comprehensive spectrum of the universe in 102 different colors. This unprecedented endeavor will provide valuable insights into the composition of our galaxy, the distribution of water and carbon dioxide in icy forms, and the conditions conducive to the emergence of life.

Unlike previous space telescopes like James Webb, which focus on deep and detailed observations of narrow regions, SPHEREx will survey vast expanses of the sky at once. This unique capability is made possible by its innovative "imaging spectroscopy" technology, which combines wide-field imaging with the ability to measure the brightness of light at different wavelengths.

One of SPHEREx's key missions is to create the first-ever 3D map of the universe in infrared light. This map will not only reveal the distribution of galaxies and other celestial objects but also shed light on the universe's early evolution, including the period of rapid expansion immediately after the Big Bang.

In addition to mapping the cosmos, SPHEREx will also investigate the formation and evolution of galaxies, measure the total amount of light emitted by faint galaxies, and search for the building blocks of life in our own galaxy. By analyzing the distribution of water and carbon dioxide ice, SPHEREx will help scientists understand the potential for life to exist in various environments within the Milky Way.

The SPHEREx project is a testament to international collaboration, with 12 institutions from around the world participating under the leadership of the California Institute of Technology. KASI's contributions to the project include the development of a cryogenic vacuum chamber to simulate the extreme conditions of space and the creation of software to process the vast amounts of data that SPHEREx will generate.

With its groundbreaking technology and ambitious scientific goals, SPHEREx promises to revolutionize our understanding of the universe and our place within it. The data it collects will provide invaluable insights into the origins of galaxies, the formation of stars and planets, and the potential for life beyond Earth.

The launch of SPHEREx is scheduled for February 28th at 12 PM (local time) from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. The telescope will be carried into orbit aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.
