LG Chem, a leading global chemical company, has been awarded the prestigious Presidential Award at the 2024 Korea Industrial Technology R&D Grand Prix for its groundbreaking biaxially oriented polyethylene (BOPE) technology, designed to create sustainable packaging solutions.

The Korea Industrial Technology R&D Grand Prix, hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy, is South Korea's most prestigious award recognizing outstanding technological achievements that contribute significantly to related industries.

LG Chem's newly developed BOPE material features a unique molecular structure that offers both exceptional strength and transparency, making it an ideal candidate for various packaging applications. Unlike traditional multi-layer plastic films, which often combine different polymers for added strength and are challenging to recycle, BOPE is a single-layer material that can be easily recycled.

"Our customers expressed a growing demand for packaging materials that are both transparent and durable while also being environmentally friendly," said Choi Yi-yeong, research fellow at LG Chem. "This need inspired us to develop BOPE. We are committed to continuing our research on sustainable and recyclable materials to contribute to a better future."

Traditional plastic packaging often combines materials like polyethylene and nylon to enhance strength, making recycling difficult. As a result, these materials are often incinerated or landfilled. LG Chem's BOPE offers a more sustainable alternative, as it can be easily recycled and reused.

Potential applications for BOPE include refillable detergent bottles and transparent pet food pouches. With the increasing global focus on environmental regulations, the demand for sustainable packaging materials is expected to grow, opening up new opportunities for BOPE in various markets.
