Dodoma - The Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC) is set to launch a new television program, "The Slave Caravan," to educate tourists on the history of the slave trade in the country while simultaneously boosting tourism revenue.
The program, to be aired on the Tanzania Safari Channel, will feature documentaries, expert interviews, historical reenactments, and visits to significant sites along the historic slave caravan route.
TBC Director General Dr. Ayub Rioba stated that this initiative aligns with the government's efforts to promote tourism by capitalizing on Tanzania's rich historical and cultural heritage.
This project was inspired by President Samia Suluhu Hassan's directive during the filming of "The Royal Tour" documentary in 2021, where she encouraged the Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) to explore the tourism potential of the slave caravan route.
Following this, TANAPA commissioned a comprehensive study from the University of Dar es Salaam, which confirmed the viability of the route for tourism. The study emphasized the route's historical significance and its accessibility for various modes of travel, including pedestrians, vehicles, and bicycles.
By showcasing this crucial period in Tanzanian history, TBC aims to attract a larger number of tourists, generate substantial revenue, and ensure the preservation of these important historical sites.
