Recently, as consumers increasingly opt for convenience store kimbap due to the economic downturn, sales of convenience store kimbap have surged. However, the high sodium content is raising significant health concerns.
Citizens' Sovereignty Watch Releases Results of Sodium Content Survey in Convenience Store Kimbap
Citizens' Sovereignty Watch conducted a survey on the sodium content of 16 kimbap products sold at major convenience stores such as GS25, CU, Seven Eleven, and Emart24. The results showed that 12 out of 16 products exceeded half of the World Health Organization's (WHO) recommended daily sodium intake of 2,000mg. In particular, GS25's 'Double Cheese Kimbap' recorded the highest sodium content at 1,691mg.
High Food Service Prices Drive Increase in Consumption of Affordable Convenience Store Kimbap
According to the Korean Statistical Information Service (KOSIS), the food service consumer price index in 2024 increased by 3.6% compared to the previous year. Especially, the kimbap food service consumer price index has surged by 32.63% over the past four years. Due to these high food service prices, more consumers are turning to affordable convenience store kimbap.
Growing Reliance on Convenience Store Kimbap, Need for Development of Healthy Kimbap
Convenience stores have a price advantage over kimbap specialty stores due to bulk purchasing of ingredients and automated systems. As a result, convenience store kimbap sales continue to increase, and the reliance on convenience store kimbap is intensifying. Citizens' Sovereignty Watch urged convenience stores to focus on developing healthy convenience foods, such as low-sodium kimbap, for consumer health.
High Sodium Intake Has Adverse Health Effects
According to WHO standards, a 6g increase in sodium intake (based on salt) increases the mortality rate of coronary heart disease by 56% and cardiovascular disease by 36%. It can also cause various health problems such as osteoporosis and obesity.
Consumers Should Check Sodium Content Comparison Labels, Convenience Stores Should Develop Low-Sodium Kimbap
Consumers should check sodium content comparison labels and purchase foods with low sodium content. Convenience stores should also reduce the sodium content of existing products and focus on developing healthy convenience foods such as low-sodium kimbap.
