NEW DELHI – Tanzania has announced its plans to launch the Fifth Licensing Round for oil and gas exploration blocks in its deep-sea Indian Ocean and onshore areas. The announcement came during India Energy Week, where Tanzanian officials are actively promoting investment opportunities in their energy sector.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy, Dr. Doto Biteko, emphasized the government's dedication to developing all available energy resources to ensure a stable and sufficient supply. He commended the Petroleum Upstream Regulatory Authority (PURA) for its efforts in attracting investors through international platforms like India Energy Week, which is hosting over 70,000 participants from more than 50 countries.
PURA Director General, Eng. Charles Sangweni, outlined the key preparations for the upcoming licensing round, including the engagement of TGS ASA, a geophysical data processing company specializing in oil and gas. TGS ASA will collect and process seismic data in unexplored deep-sea areas and will also be responsible for marketing this data to potential investors worldwide. This will expand the availability of petroleum data for interested parties.
PURA has completed mapping 26 exploration blocks for the licensing round. Of these, 23 are located in the deep waters of the Indian Ocean, and three are situated in Lake Tanganyika.
The Tanzanian government is optimistic that this licensing round will attract significant investment, further unlocking the country's oil and gas potential. The bidding round is expected to launch in March.
