DODOMA, Tanzania – The Tanzanian government has solidified its commitment to hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) by officially signing a contract with Italian firm SPAR for the construction of a state-of-the-art stadium in Dodoma. The project, valued at 352 billion Tanzanian shillings (approximately $150 million USD), marks a significant step in the nation's preparations for the prestigious tournament.

The newly unveiled stadium will boast a seating capacity of 32,000 and is designed to meet international standards, enabling it to host major sporting events, including AFCON matches. Construction is slated to be completed within 24 months.

At the signing ceremony, Prof. Palamagamba Kabudi, Minister for Information, Education, Culture, Arts, and Sports, emphasized the stadium's importance, stating it will become a prominent landmark in Dodoma, alongside other iconic structures. He confirmed that the project is fully funded by the Tanzanian government.

"This project marks another milestone for Dodoma," Prof. Kabudi declared. "Once completed, it will not only be an iconic structure but also position the city as a hub for international sporting events.”

The construction of the Dodoma stadium is part of a broader government initiative to upgrade and develop modern sports infrastructure across the country. Prof. Kabudi highlighted ongoing progress at other sites, including the Arusha Stadium, which is currently 26% complete. He urged local leaders and residents to collaborate with the contractor to ensure the project's smooth and timely execution.

Deputy Minister Hamis Mwinjuma outlined additional preparations for AFCON 2027, including the development of training grounds in Dar es Salaam and Arusha, as well as renovations at existing stadiums like Benjamin Mkapa Stadium and Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam. He also announced plans for a new entertainment arena in Dar es Salaam to support cultural and sporting activities.

Mwinjuma praised President Samia Suluhu Hassan for her unwavering support of Tanzanian sports, noting her public recognition of athletes' achievements as a significant source of motivation.

Dodoma MP Anthony Mavunde commended the President for her decisive leadership in bringing the stadium project to fruition. He explained that previous attempts to secure funding and partnerships for the project had been unsuccessful, but President Hassan’s direct intervention and commitment to government funding have now made the stadium a reality. "We have waited a long time for this day," Mavunde stated.
