San Salvador, El Salvador – El Salvador has significantly expanded its air connectivity in recent years, signing a total of 15 air agreements with various countries. Notably, seven of these agreements have been established in the past four years, highlighting the positive impact of President Nayib Bukele's administration on international relations.

Eduardo García, Director of Economic Relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasized the government's commitment to enhancing air services during a recent session of the Legislative Assembly's committee on Salvadorans abroad, legislation, and government.

"In the 2021-2024 administration alone, we have successfully signed seven agreements," García stated. "This demonstrates the effective coordination between the Civil Aviation Authority, the Foreign Ministry, and the strong bilateral relations we are fostering. In recent years, we have signed half of all existing air agreements."

El Salvador's current air partners include the United States, Spain, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Ecuador, Colombia, Cuba, Chile, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates. The country has also established agreements with Panama, Qatar, Canada, Brazil, and Uruguay.

García explained that the government's focus is on "a connectivity policy, a facilitation policy" that aims to better connect Salvadorans and foreigners, not only for tourism but also for cargo transport and business opportunities.

Patricia Aguilera Bran, Director of Legal Affairs at the Foreign Ministry, highlighted the government's ongoing efforts to expand international air service opportunities, ensuring they are efficient and competitive.

The Legislative Assembly recently ratified the air agreement between El Salvador and Costa Rica, signed during President Bukele's visit to San José on November 11, 2024. This agreement aims to ensure a high level of safety and security for international air services between the two Central American nations.

Ana Figueroa, president of the committee on Salvadorans abroad, legislation, and government, reiterated the importance of these agreements during the plenary session.

"The ratification of this agreement is a step towards the future and regional progress," Figueroa said. "Some of the benefits we will gain from this agreement include aviation security, as our country is receiving more tourists thanks to the improved security situation we now enjoy."

This expansion of air agreements reflects El Salvador's growing commitment to international cooperation and its efforts to strengthen its position as a regional hub for tourism and commerce.
