The international legal order and humanitarian norms, which humanity has accumulated through a long history of war and conflict, have once again been brutally trampled. Recently, a unprecedented incident occurred in which a civilian aid flotilla, which had departed from various parts of Europe to help the residents of the Gaza Strip who are mired in starvation and misery, was forcibly seized by the Israeli military on the high seas—international waters. Detaining civilian vessels of third countries by military force on the high seas, where sovereignty does not apply and freedom of navigation is strictly guaranteed, and forcibly abducting the 430 volunteers on board is a clear state-sponsored kidnapping and nothing short of piracy, utterly lacking any basis in international law.

Furthermore, what appalled us was the barbaric attitude of the Israeli authorities toward the abducted civilian activists. There are successive testimonies that the activists, who were escorted to Israel, were treated as criminals, forced to kneel with their hands tied behind their backs, and subjected to indiscriminate assault, psychological abuse, and even sexual humiliation during the detention process. Such inhumane treatment, which attempts to obliterate the most fundamental human dignity, is an act that has broken the minimum humanitarian line that must be protected even amidst the horrors of war.

What added to the gravity of the situation was the shameless provocation of the current Israeli regime. Israel's Minister of National Security personally posted an inhumane, mocking video on social media, strolling with a smile among the suffering volunteers and waving the Israeli flag, and heavily publicized it. Not only did he ignore the tragedy in the Gaza Strip, where tens of thousands of civilians lost their lives and even food and medicine were cut off, leaving them on the verge of starvation, but he also turned those who extended a hand of pure humanitarian aid into objects of ridicule. This arrogant behavior was more than enough to arouse immense public outrage in the international community.

Accordingly, countries around the world simultaneously expressed fierce anger. European leaders, including the Prime Ministers of Italy and Spain, declared that they would never tolerate acts of aggression that violate human dignity, and the governments of major nations, including France, Canada, and the United Kingdom, all summoned the Israeli ambassadors to their respective countries to deliver strong protests. Although Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu belatedly reprimanded the minister's erratic behavior and hurriedly deported all foreign activists on a chartered plane to manage the diplomatic fallout, it was already spilled water, and Israel's extrajudicial barbarism, deeply engraved in the international community, will remain as an indelible stain.

This situation is not merely a tragedy in a distant country. Since two South Korean citizens were included in the abducted aid flotilla, it directly links to our immediate issues of sovereignty and the protection of our own citizens. Fortunately, our citizens were released safely through the immediate deportation measure, but the firm determination and law-of-the-land response shown by the government are noteworthy. President Lee Jae-myung sharply questioned the legal basis for arresting and detaining our citizens on the high seas, which is neither Israel's territory nor its territorial waters, during a cabinet meeting. Pointing the blade of criticism directly at the Netanyahu regime, which commits inhumane tyranny under the pretext of the special circumstances of wartime, was a natural and proper duty as the head of a sovereign state.

Furthermore, regarding the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for Prime Minister Netanyahu on war crimes charges, our government aligned itself with advanced European democracies and stated that it would review measures for arrest and international judicial cooperation should he enter South Korean territory. This is a powerful diplomatic message that the Republic of Korea, as a responsible member of the international community, will defend universal human rights and humanitarian values that transcend borders. The decision to stand on the side of international legal justice, rather than being buried simply in alliances or camp logic, will serve as an opportunity to firmly establish its status as a global pivotal state that loves peace.

The international community must never dismiss this incident as a one-time happening. If the act of crushing and ridiculing the voices of civilians calling for human rights and peace with guns and bayonets is tolerated, the rule of law and security in the global village will collapse uncontrollably. The Israeli authorities ought to bow their heads and deeply apologize before the international community and the victim nations for the violation of international law—the seizure on the high seas—and the inhumane violence inflicted on the activists. In addition, they must immediately lift the anti-humanitarian blockade on the Gaza Strip and ensure the safe entry of humanitarian aid supplies. A nation that turns away from the path pointed to by the compass of justice and human conscience must bear in mind that it will ultimately be unable to avoid severe isolation by the international community and the judgment of history.
